The Water
Security
Initiative

For so many, water
insecurity is a daily event.

Healthy Food
Rural

We’ve seen the swollen rivers and streams, the fallen trees, and the downed power lines. Those in rural areas are at unique risks due to power outages and storm damage, but they also have fewer resources available to prepare for storms and disasters. And the very conditions that have left them without water prevent first responders from reaching them.

Low Income

They may be your rural neighbors. They may be your next door neighbor in the city. In either case, their ability to prepare for emergencies and disasters by be limited by finances, transportation, physical challenges, or fears of pandemic risks. Will they have critical emergency water when storms hit or their water supplies are damaged?

Medical
Elderly

How does Mary, who uses a walker, carry water to flush a toilet? As we age, water becomes more and more important. Being with out water creates health and sanitation risks. Conventional approaches to water security create risks of falls and injury.

Challenged

Our national approach to emergency water is to buy bottled water, fill sinks and tubs, and carry buckets of water to meet our needs. Many simply lack the ability to do so. Not only physical conditions, but medicinal side effects can prevent proper preparation.

They’ve served our country. They sacrificed dearly. They don’t complain. They don’t ask for help. Many live every day not knowing if their water supply will be functional or available following a storm, wildfire, hurricane, or earthquake.

More efforts are being applied to providing basic potable water supplies to native American communities. Basic water needs must be met, But, water insecurity should be addressed as well.

What We’ve Done

Small steps enroute to large impact

How we’ll change lives

Health

We lived for millennia without central heat and air conditioning. We have never lived long without water–not only for consumption, but for basic sanitation and hygiene. Lacking water for basic cleanliness and drinking creates health risks for everyone, but especially the very young and the elderly.

Education

We take water for granted. We assume it is always there, until it isn’t. Those who experience this regularly understand. Those with the power and resources often have no idea water insecurity exists anywhere–Until we show them.
